Scatter Plots

Scatter Plots: Useful Graphs for Examining Large Data Sets

Reports and standard table displays are hard and time-consuming to interpret, and aggregations of the data — which can make reports and tables easier to understand — can mask outliers, correlations and trends and make them difficult or impossible to see. Scatter Plots are an excellent information visualization to select when you are looking for positive and negative correlations, trends and outliers in large statistical databases. They are particularly useful in financial services applications.

Spot correlations and expose outliers

Datawatch's Scatter Plot data visualizations are easy to set up and are highly customizable. You can configure your display in ways that will make the most sense to you and your users, and users have all the tools they need to filter and manipulate the Scatter Plot to concentrate on the most relevant subsets in the data. Scatter Plots are a fairly sophisticated visualization and are best used to explore and discover new truths in your data. You can quickly identify anomalies and then take corrective action if needed while a problem is small — before it becomes unmanageable.

Scatter Plots are particularly useful for finding outliers. In this example, we can see that Belgium has a very high PEG Ratio (X Axis) compared to its peers, especially when compared to the amount of Invested Capital (Y Axis).Scatter Plots are particularly useful for finding outliers. Excellent visualization for use in analytical dashboards

Scatter Plots are a great companion to the other data visualizations we offer — particularly our Treemap and Heatmap visualizations — and many of our customers use them in multi-visualization displays. They can use the Scatter Plot to find interesting data points and then use other visualizations to look at the same data from different perspectives, or to present findings to their colleagues.

Geographic Scatter Plots: Easy to interpret with virtually no training

There are many instances when you must correlate changes in complex databases with physical locations. The Geographic Scatter Plot makes this easy and allows even the most non-technical users to explore and understand the information stored in their systems. Geographic Scatter Plots can sometimes reveal surprising and unexpected groupings that would be difficult to identify in traditional reports. They are also excellent presentation tools and can help convey important findings to the public or decision-makers.

You can use any map image you like and define coordinate systems that match the resolution of your map. Hover displays automatically pop up when the cursor moves over a data point on the map to show detailed information. Geographic Scatter Plots also support all of the filtering and zooming tools you have come to expect in Datawatch's data visualization software.
