What's New in Monarch 11

Monarch 11 has been re-engineered to take advantage of new technologies and make Monarch more powerful and easier to use than ever before. Monarch has a brand-new, up-to-date interface and can work on multi-core, 64-bit machines where Office 2010 64-bit is installed.

In addition, previously existing features have been refined and improved as a result of feedback from Monarch users:

Monarch 64-Bit Edition Is Now Available

Monarch 64-bit edition, which works with Office 2010 64-bit, takes advantage of the virtual and physical memory offered by 64-bit systems.

However, note that unless you already have Office 2010 64-bit installed, it is recommended that the 32-bit version of Monarch be used, for compatibility with existing OLE DB and ODBC data sources and performance, even on 64-bit operating systems.

If you have a 64-bit SQL data source that does not have a 32-bit ODBC or OLE DB driver, then you should install the 64-bit version of Monarch to enable access to it.

Increased Capacity Means More Data to Work With

Monarch's internal database size has been increased to allow you to work and process more data.

For instance, whereas Monarch version 10.5 might overflow the internal database on an extract, producing a handful of columns at around 9 million rows in the Table View/Data View, Monarch 11 would be able to hold over 16 million rows.

Capability to Export Charts to Different Graphic Formats

You can now export charts using the Export Wizard, as you would reports, tables and summaries. You can choose among different chart formats (png, bmp, gif, jpg, tif, and wmp) and also set the location where the chart will be exported.

Support for XML as Export Output

Monarch now supports XML as an export output format, using fixed internal schemas. The schemas have been kept as simple as possible to allow easy import into other systems as well as transformation via XSLT.

Display Multiple Summaries on the Work Area

It's now possible to display multiple summaries on screen at the same time, even over multiple monitors.

In addition, if the summaries are set up to be filter-sensitive, they will all update when the active filter is changed.

Summaries Can Now be Displayed in Standard or Hierarchical Mode

Hierarchical views allow you to collapse, at individual key levels, a Summary with multiple keys.

The buttons to toggle between Standard and Hierarchical view are located on the right side of the View group on the Summary tab.

Monarch Ribbon Replaces the Menu

The ribbon is the modern way to help you find, understand, and use commands efficiently and directly - with a minimum number of clicks. The ribbon groups all the commands for each of the documents you work with: reports, table, and summaries.

Monarch Ribbon Replaces the Menu

The Monarch ribbon is a hybrid ribbon interface which blends the Office 2007/2010 ribbon with some of the successful features of previous Monarch versions, such as context-sensitive switching of tabs for each window type.

While the ribbon represents a new way of organizing and presenting the controls within Monarch in general, the controls themselves have changed very little from previous versions of Monarch. All of the original functionality that you may be used to is still there, but merely presented in a different way.

Commands are organized in logical groups, which are collected together under tabs. Each tab relates to a type of Monarch object, such as report, table, or summary.

Document Explorer Shows All documents At-a-Glance

The document explorer provides an interface to easily view and access all reports, tables, summaries, and charts.

When you open a project for instance, the Document Explorer will show you at a glance all reports, tables, and summaries associated with the project.

Use the Document Explorer as you would the Windows Explorer: simply click on a node to expand or collapse it. Double click on an item on the Document Explorer to display it on the Monarch work area.

Right-click on a document on the Document Explorer to bring up a context menu to access relevant commands for that document type, for instance Sort or Filter on Data View.

The Document Explorer also includes Project and Model information nodes so you find project and model information in one easy-to-use location.

Document Tabs Make Switching Among Documents and Views Easier

All documents now have their own tabs on the Monarch work area. Each open document is represented by a tab, and each tab has an icon to indicate a report, a table or a summary.

Document Tabs Make Switching Among Documents and Views Easier

You can easily switch from one document to the next by simply clicking the document's tab.

Floatable/Dockable Documents and Enhanced Monitor Support Make Working with Multiple Documents Easier

You can now float a document out of the Monarch work area, and move it out to a separate area, such as an extended monitor.

The field list can be maximized on one monitor while another document is open on another. Or, you can compare a report on one monitor while data view is open on another, and you have more screen area to work with.

Improved Search Interface

The new search interface allows you to search all open documents (reports, tables, and summaries). You may even search through reports that are not currently open.

Search displays all hits on a new document. And you can double-click on each hit to go directly to the report line, table row, or summary row containing the hit.

Charts Have Been Enhanced, With More Options for Styling and Viewing

Charts now have a superior appearance, with more options for styling.

Charts Have Been Enhanced

Multiple charts can now be viewed on a single window.

And you can easily work with chart values, for example, when looking at a data set with a large number of values, you can simply select a range of values using the mouse whilst holding down the left mouse button. This will drill down and re-render the chart.

You can also use the scroll bar under the chart to scroll along the values, as well as re-size the chart.

Filter Order Preserved on All Filters Exports

Previously, it was not possible to dictate the order of exports when performing an All Filters export. This presented some issues, for instance in the case of spreadsheets, where the order of tabs is very important when assembling dashboards. In Monarch 11, the order is now dictated by the position of the filters in the filters collection, where filters can be moved up and down in the list.

Live Field List Makes Tweaking Models Properties Easier and Quicker

As you make changes in the field list, they are reflected immediately in the table.
